LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- In a back and forth game with 48 total turnovers, Piedmont College came out on top 63-44 against the Lady Scots basketball team on Wednesday night. Piedmont College is now 14-3 overall and 6-2 in the GSAC, while Covenant drops to 5-12 and 4-5 in the conference.
For the first 10 minutes of the game the teams went back and forth. From then, Piedmont went on a 15-0 streak to go ahead 31-20 with just over three minutes left in the half. Covenant was able to get some buckets to break the scoring run, but Piedmont still took a 39-25 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Piedmont continued to add to their lead. The Lady Lions took their largest lead of the game at 57-32 with seven minutes remaining.
Piedmont shot 48 percent (30-63), but did not connect on a 3-pointer going 0-for-10. Piedmont's size was a factor all night as they scored 50 points in the paint, compared to Covenant's 20. Several times Covenant was forced to take 3-pointers due to Piedmont's defense and, as a result, the Lady Scots went 4-of-22 from behind the arc.
Margaret Cross led the scoring for Covenant with 15 points. Jessie Blankenship had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Piedmont's scoring was led by Sada Wheeler and her double-double of 27 points and 12 rebounds. Wheeler also added four steals and four blocked shots.
Covenant returns to action on Saturday, January 28 at home against Salem College. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
