ATLANTA, Ga. -- Wednesday night, the Lady Scots basketball team ended their string of losses as they defeated conference foe Spelman College 60-55. Covenant now moves to 5-10 and 4-3 in the GSAC while Spelman drops to 2-9 and 1-6 in conference play.

The game went back and forth during the first half until eight minutes in when Covenant took a 12-11 lead thanks to a Jessie Blankenship layup. From this point on, Covenant would stay in the lead for the remainder of competition. With a minute left in the first half, Terah Hooper connected on a 3-pointer to push Covenants lead to five points as they entered halftime.

The second half was mostly controlled by Covenant. With 11 minutes remaining, Covenant had increased their lead to 16 points. Spelman eventually fought their way back to bring the Lady Scots' lead to only one point with two minutes left in regulation.

Blankenship answered the Spelman run with a layup, after a Morgan Woodward free-throw, to bring the Covenant lead up to 57-53. After Spelman's Andrea Kinzer cut the Covenant lead to 57-55 with a layup, Blankenship was fouled with eight seconds remaining and proceeded to make both of her free-throws, ending Spelman's hope of tying the game.

Covenant shot 40 percent (19-47) from the floor and 18-of-31 from the free-throw line. Blankenship led the team with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. She was followed by Margaret Cross who earned 14 points and Woodward who chipped in 10 points and two assists.

Spelman's Kinzer had a team-high of 12 points while grabbing four rebounds. Tiana Wlech added 10 points and four rebounds in the loss.

Covenant plays their next game on Saturday, January 21 on the road against Huntingdon College.
