LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Saturday afternoon, the women's basketball played an intense game against the LaGrange College Lady Panthers who are currently 6-0 in the Great South Athletic Conference and 10-4 for the season. Covenant, who is now 3-3 in the conference and 4-10 overall, played hard but were unable to find a win as LaGrange won 97-81.
The opening minutes were heated as the Lady Scots hung with the Lady Panthers as the score was tied 14-14. After this point, LaGrange began to pull away due to a 16-2 scoring run. Covenant could not find a rhythm and had difficulty in connecting with the basket. Finally, Covenant got a few shots to fall as Morgan Woodward and Christine Core scored baskets on back-to-back possessions. Liz DeMaria banked in a short jumper just before the halftime buzzer sounded, but LaGrange still held a 46-30 lead going into the break. The 16-point lead held by LaGrange would be the same as the end of the game.
Both teams played well during the second half, each scoring 51 points. Core led Covenant in scoring with 24 points, while also grabbing four rebounds. Margaret Cross tallied 19 points, while Jessie Blankenship was one rebound away from a double-double with nine and had 14 points.
Katie Covington stood out on the court for the Lady Panthers, earning 33 points and was 10-of-11 for shots inside the 3-point line. She also came up 12-for-12 from the free-throw line.
Covenants next game is away against Spelman College at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18.
