Covenant College Athletics Recap: Week Thirty-Two

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The 2010-2011 Covenant College athletics season is nearing its end, as the spring teams are winding down their schedules and preparing for the postseason ahead.

With just two more regular season matches remaining, the Covenant College tennis teams took to the road this past Wednesday to play one of those matches against Sewanee.  The host Tigers proved to be too much for the visiting Scots, though, handling their DIII counterparts by scores of 8-1 over the women and 6-3 over the men.  Senior number one Josh Jeremiah was yet again rock solid for the Scots, winning both his singles and doubles matches.  For the ladies, Kelsey Whitted and Jane Shibley teamed up in doubles to win the Lady Scots only point on the day.  Both teams have just three wins apiece this season, and will host Carson Newman in their last matches of the season on Monday.

Meanwhile, the golf team endured a rough week 32 by finishing in 15th place at the Emory Invitational. The team shot a forgettable 342 in the final round of the tournament to finish 15th in the field of 17 teams.  Jon Jon Spencer led the Scots with a two round score of 159, while Alex Mosteller was second on the team with a 162.  The Scots have one final event – the Great South Conference Meet – this year, and will play it on April 25-26 at the Orchard Golf and Country Club in Clarkesville, Georgia.

The softball team also ran into some rough waters this past week – both literally and figuratively – as the team's Friday game against Wesleyan College was cancelled because of the rain and because the ladies posted a less-than-stellar 1-3 record for the week.  In the lone victory, pitcher Chelsea Krafft improved to 12-4 on the year with a game two win over Birmingham Southern that saw her strike out 6 batters and surrender no runs in the 3-0 victory.  This came after the Lady Scots were shutout 3-0 themselves, and it was bookended by 10-2 and 8-2 losses to Piedmont College some 2 days later.  The team is now 15-11 on the season with 3 regular season doubleheaders still to play.

Elsewhere, the baseball team moved to 20-11 this past week by going 3-0 in games against Birmingham Southern and Tennessee Temple.  In the 11-9 win over 'Southern, Taylor Oldham had a game-high 3 RBIs, while pitcher Demarius Johnson came on to close out the win with 5 strikeouts in 2 innings.  Against Temple, James Rollins had two of his team's four home runs as the Scots cruised to 13-6 and 8-0 victories.  The team is now just one win shy of breaking the 21 victories it posted last season, and has seven more regular season games in which to do it.  The next one is against Bryan College on Tuesday, April 19.
