Covenant Punishes Spelman

ATLANTA -- The Covenant Lady Scots used hot hitting and pitching to easily sweep Great South Athletic Conference foe Spelman College on Monday night by scores of 14-1 and 17-3. Covenant moves its record to 17-11 on the year, while Spelman drops to 2-25.

Covenant struck early and often as they scored a total of 31 runs on 23 hits, as well as drawing 17 walks, in the two games combined.  Of the 10 total innings played - both games were called due to the 8-run rule - the Lady Scots scored in all but 2 of those innings.

Pitching was also outstanding on the day, even though ace Chelsea Krafft threw just 3 innings.  Beth Harris pitched a complete game in game one, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits.  Harris struck out 9 in the game and picks up her second win of the season.  In game two, Sonja Townsend and Krafft combined to shut down the Spelman offense.  Townsend went the first 2 innings and gave up 3 runs, but Krafft then came on in the 3rd inning and did not allow a run while striking out 7 over the final three innings of play for her 13th win of the year.

On the offensive side, Covenant had several players make key contributions.  Harris was the standout in game one as she went 3-for-4 with 2 home runs, 4 RBIs, and 4 runs scored.  Harris now leads the Lady Scots in both home runs (6) and RBIs (25) as well as boasting a .344 batting average.  Also in game one, Jenni Jobe went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 2 doubles.  Kim Cuticchia, Lauren Johns, Lindsey Potter, and Candace Patterson each knocked in a run for Covenant.

In game two, Rebekah Marbury went 2-for-4 with 3 runs batted in and Chandler Shepherd also drove in 3 runs with her 2-for-3 game.  The two combined to score 5 runs as well.  Every Covenant starter in game two either scored a run or had a hit, but most had both of these.

Covenant will return to Lookout Mountain for their final two doubleheaders of the regular season.  First, on Thursday, April 21 Covenant will host Agnes Scott College with game one starting at 4:30pm.  Then on Friday, April 22, LaGrange College will visit for a pair of games with the first one beginning at 3:00pm.
