LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant College Scots continued to impress Saturday afternoon, beating local rival Tennessee Temple 13-6 and 8-0. The bats were alive for the Scots (20-11) who pounded out 25 hits on the day. They were led by James Rollins who was 5-for-7, with 2 home-runs and a double. Taylor Oldham hit his team leading 9th home-run. Luke Furuto also had a big day going 4-for-5 with a double and a triple. And David Lockwood went 4-for-6 with 2 doubles.
Game one saw Tyler Smith earn his NCCAA leading 9th win. Of the 3 runs he surrendered, just 1 was earned. He was able to keep the ball low in the zone as evidence to his 8 ground-outs and 3 strike-outs. His outstanding year continues as he remains a perfect 9-0 with a 1.61 ERA.
The game was 1-0 in the bottom of the 2nd before Covenant opened it up with 5 runs. Temple fought back and made it 6-4 going into the bottom of the 4th, but the Scots responded with a 4 run inning and put the game out of reach. Shane Ludwick came in and pitched the final 2 innings of the game.
Game two saw
Andre Glover pitch a gem, while the bats continued to sizzle. After Glover shut down Temple with a 7-pitch (all strikes) top of the first, the offense rewarded him in the bottom half with 4 runs. This proved to be all Glover would need as he dazzled over 7 innings, throwing a shut-out and only giving up 2 hits. He improved his record to 6-3, while his ERA sits at 2.20.
The offense, going of the momentum from Glover's pitching, managed 10 hits and 8 runs. Jonathan Carter and James Rollins each hit their 4th home-runs. Oldham, Lockwood and Furuto each had 2 hits, and the Scots rolled on to their 20th win of the season.
With their record at 20-11, the Scots are having one of their best seasons in school history. They hope to end the season strong in their last 7 games. But that will not be easy, as they are on the road for 5 of the games, and have just 2 remaining home games. The Scots road record is currently 3-6, while their home record sits at an astounding 17-5.
Covenant hopes for payback Tuesday when they take on Bryan College, who beat them earlier in the year. The game will be played on Lookout Mountain, with a start time of 4:00pm.
