DEMOREST, Ga. -- Piedmont College had their way with the Covenant Lady Scots on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Lions swept a doubleheader by scores of 10-2 and 8-2. Piedmont, which leads the Great South Athletic Conference with a 9-1 record, improve to 20-10 overall this year. Covenant drops to 15-11 on the season.
Piedmont took control early in game one, and Covenant could never recover. The Lady Lions scored two runs each in the first four innings of the game to take an 8-1 lead. Covenant got on the board in the 4th inning on a Beth Harris home run, her 4th of the season. Harris would score again in the 6th inning when she came home on a wild pitch.
But Piedmont was just too much on this day, even for Covenant ace Chelsea Krafft. Krafft had a difficult day as she allowed 8 earned runs on 12 base hits while striking out just 3 and walking 5. Krafft's record drops to 12-5 on the season, but has now struck out 126 batters in 119 innings pitched.
More offense was in store for the Lady Lions in game two. Piedmont scored three runs in the 1st inning thanks to run-producing hits from Jamie Dennis, Taylor Morgan, and Emily Cheek. The Lady Lions tacked on two more runs in the 2nd inning on a Morgan 2-run single as Piedmont was cruising at this point.
Covenant scored single runs in the 5th and 6th innings to cut into the deficit. Kim Cuticchia singled home Chandler Shepherd in the 5th inning, and then in the 6th inning, Morgan Booker took a bases-loaded walk that brought home Harris to make it an 8-2 game.
For the day, Covenant could manage just 4 runs on 12 base hits. Newly appointed number 3 hitter Beth Harris went 3-for-7 on the day with 3 runs scored and an RBI. Jenni Jobe also had 3 hits on the day for the Lady Scots.
Covenant will have a quick turnaround as they play again on Monday night against Spelman College in a doubleheader. Game one will start at 6:00pm in Atlanta, Georgia. The next home doubleheader for the Lady Scots is Thursday, April 21 against Agnes Scott College with game one beginning at 4:30pm.
