Covenant College Athletics Recap: Week Thirty-One

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Week thirty-one of the Covenant College athletics season began on the golf course last Monday, as the members of the Scots and Lady Scots golf teams took to Lookout Mountain Golf Club for the two round Reeder Cup.  The men, led by freshman Alex Mosteller's fifth place score of 155, finished in fifth place of 9 teams.  Senior David Spencer finished tied for ninth with a score of 158.

As for the ladies, Jordan Agate competed as an individual and finished with an impressive two round score of 184 that was good enough for sixth place out of the 37 competitors.

Shifting over to the diamond, the Scots baseball team endured a rough week, as it went 0-3 with losses to Oglethorpe and Emory Universities.  In Wednesday's 11-6 loss at Oglethorpe, James Rollins led the team with 2 RBIs via his first home run of the year.  Sophomore Sterling Witt struck out 5 batters but conceded the loss from the mound.

Against Emory, the Scots nearly pulled off an upset over the #26 ranked Eagles, but lost 5-4 in extra innings.  The following day at home was not so close, though, as the Eagles soared to a 10-3 victory over Covenant.  The Scots are now 17-11 on the year.

The softball team, on the other hand, enjoyed yet another successful week as it defeated Huntingdon College 3-0 and 6-5, and split with Maryville 5-3 and 4-9.  The Lady Scots were led from the plate by sophomore Christine Core and senior Lindsey Potter, who capped a late rally in Covenant's 6-5 win over Huntingdon with crucial RBIs.  Junior Chelsea Krafft continued her dominance from the rubber by pitching 30 combined strikeouts in 3 started games and improving her record to 11-3.  The Lady Scots are now 14-8 on the season.

Last but not least there are the tennis teams, who both split their week 31 matches to improve to 3 wins on the year.  The ladies lost 6-3 at Huntingdon before moving on to sweep Bethel 9-0, while the men beat Huntingdon 5-4 and lost to Bethel 6-3.  Men's senior Josh Jeremiah won all four of his doubles and singles matches in the two game stretch, while Johnny Herberich was also undefeated in singles competition.  The men are 3-10 on the season, while the ladies are 3-11.
