MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant baseball team, after winning the opening game on Thursday, got swept on Friday by Maryville College 6-2 and 4-2. Covenant was only able to muster six hits in the first game, and five in the second game. The first game was a heart breaker for the Covenant Scots. They took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth, only to see it disappear on an RBI base hit from Maryville center-fielder, Mikee Moore. After failing to score in the top of tenth, Covenant watched in disbelief as Maryville walked off with a grand slam. Errors and lack of offensive production were the undoing of Covenant.
David Lockwood went 2 for 4 with a double in the first game, and Jonathan Carter had Covenant's only two RBIs when he got a base hit in the second. The Scots held Maryville to just one run through the first seven innings. They held the lead from the top of the second until Maryville tied it in the eighth. Andre Glover started for Covenant, pitching six innings and giving up just one run. Shane Ludwick relieved him in the seventh, pitching three strong innings and giving up one run. Brian Simons took the loss in the first game, but all the runs he yielded were unearned.
The second game did not go much better than the first. Demarius Johnson started; he gave up three runs (one earned) over five innings of work. He struck out six but took his first loss off the season. Eddy Jamerson relieved Johnson. In his first pitching appearance for the Scots, Jamerson pitched two innings. He gave up two hits and two runs while striking out one. Lockwood pitched the eighth and held Maryville scoreless.
Covenant could not get anything going off of Maryville starter Johnny Lingo, who stifled Covenant for eight strong innings, improving his record to 3-0. Mark Morales struck out the side in the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.
Kurtis Wiles went 1 for 2 with a hit by pitch and a run scored. Jared Carlson went 1 for 3 with an RBI single which scored James Rollins who had ripped a double two batters before. Taylor Oldham reached base twice via a hit and walk.
After losing two out of three to Maryville, Covenant's record is now 8-3. The Scots will play a weekend series at home against Piedmont College starting with a nine inning game Thursday at 2:00pm.
