LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant College Scots took their first home loss of the season, losing to Piedmont 5-7 Friday afternoon. Covenant trailed the whole game, despite making a comeback attempt late. Down 5-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Scots started chipping away at the lead. Sterling Witt doubled and Taylor Oldham stepped up to the dish and hit a two run home run. Fisher then hit a single, stole second and scored on an error by the second baseman to cut the score to 5-3.
Piedmont added runs in the ninth inning off a two run home run from designated hitter Kevin McConnell. Leading 7-3, Piedmont's closer got two quick outs. But Covenant still had some fight left in them. James Rollins got a single, and then Jonathan Carter stepped up and hit a two run home run over the left field wall. Covenant was not able to add any more runs and lost the game 7-5.
Oldham had a big day in the loss, going 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Jared Carlson went 2 for 5. James Rollins went 1 for 3 with two walks. Luke Furuto stole two bases on the day.
Andre Glover started for Covenant on the mound. He had a quality day, pitching six innings, striking out three batters, and giving up just three runs.
Wes McDowell and Eddie Jamerson pitched in relief. McDowell gave up one run in one inning of work. Jamerson gave up two runs in two innings, striking out two.
Covenant could not get things going off of Piedmont starter Kevin Caldwell who is coming off Great South Atlantic Conference player of the week along with national honors mention. Caldwell was strong pitching a complete game, giving up five runs (four earned). He struck out six, and showed command of the strike zone the whole game. He improved to 4-0 on the year.
Covenant plays Piedmont in a nine inning double header Saturday. The first game starts at 11:00am.
