LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant College baseball team split a double-header with Piedmont College Saturday, winning the first game 10-3, while losing the second game 6-2. In game one, James Rollins led the charge with five RBIs and three doubles. Taylor Oldham also had a big game, hitting a home run to lead off the game. He also walked three times.
Tyler Smith started for Covenant; he pitched seven innings, giving up just two runs in the route. He struck out five and walked just one, improving to a team best 5-0 on the year. Freshman Ben Mason, in his first college appearance, pitched a perfect ninth to seal the victory for the Scots.
David Lockwood had a two run double. Luke Furuto scored twice, going 1 for 3 with a walk.
With the first win, the Scots tied the series at 1-1 and looked to win the rubber match in game two.
Game two went down to the wire. Both teams scored early and then were held scoreless till the ninth. Piedmont scored two runs in the second while Covenant scored a run in the second and third inning. But Piedmont broke through in the top of the ninth and scored four runs, winning the game after they staved off a ninth inning rally from Covenant.
Oldham, who is swinging a red-hot bat since moving to lead off spot, hit his third home run of the series. He leads the team with five home runs on the year.
Covenant's only other run in the game came from an RBI single from Lockwood which scored Jamerson.
Demarius Johnson started and pitched five innings, surrendering two runs. He struck out four and yielded seven base runners.
Brian Simons was strong in relief. In three innings of work, he gave up just two hits and no runs, striking out three.
Shane Ludwick took the loss, just his first of the year.
Covenant was unable to score any runs in the ninth, despite bringing the tying run to the plate. They are now 2-4 in the Great South and 9-5 overall.
The Scots next game is Tuesday against Bryan College starting at 6:00pm in Dayton, TN.
