LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Lady Scots basketball team fell at home to Millsaps College by a score of 57-38 Thursday night in Barnes Physical Education Center. Covenant stayed with the Lady Majors through the first 13 minutes of action, but Millsaps used a 14-2 run to close out the first half with a nine-point lead, 26-17. From there, the visitors would cruise in the second half. Covenant is now 2-6 on the season, having dropped its last three contests. Millsaps improves to 6-2 on the year and now boasts wins in five of its last six games this year.
Despite falling behind 6-0 after the first four minutes of play, Covenant responded with a 15-6 run over a nine minute period where Jessie Blankenship, Hannah Craft, Jessica Chittenden, Kiersten Nielsen, and Margaret Cross all scored buckets. Cross' 3-pointer at the 7:18 mark gave the Lady Scots their largest lead of the game (15-12). On the ensuing Millsaps possession, Shante Morton knocked down a 3-pointer to tie the game and give new life to the Lady Majors. The triple started what would turn into a 14-0 run as Morgan Woodward's layup inside two minutes was all the points Covenant could manage in the final seven minutes of the first half.
In the second half, the Lady Scots continued to battle and trimmed the lead to seven with 11:14 left to play, but Ruth Gibson's 3-pointer was answered by another Millsaps 3-pointer. During the final 10 minutes, the Lady Majors pulled even farther from reach, going up by as many as 21.
Morton and Janice Okeke finished the game with 12 points apiece to lead all scorers. Morton's game-high 13 rebounds gave the junior her third double-double of the season.
Covenant's leading scorer in Jessie Blankenship managed only eight points off 3-for-13 shooting. The sophomore also pulled down six rebounds while Craft and Gibson had five apiece. Ten of the Lady Scots scored baskets.
The Lady Scots shot 15-for-44 (34.1%) from the floor and 3-for-7 (42.9%) from 3-point territory for the game. Millsaps shot 21-for-59 (35.6%) from the floor but forced Covenant into 22 turnovers and outrebounded the Lady Scots 39-31.
Covenant will return to action when they travel to Sewanee, Tenn. for a double-header with the men against The University of the South. Women's tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m.
