SEWANEE, Tenn -- The new year was unkind to the Covenant Lady Scots as they fell in their first game of 2012 to the Sewanee Lady Tigers 66-26 on Wednesday night. The loss drops the Lady Scots to 2-7 on the season, while Sewanee improves to 7-4.
Jessica Chittenden led Covenant with six points and pulled down four rebounds. Jessie Blankenship chipped in with four points and a team-high six rebounds.
Sewanee took a quick 10-0 lead within the first six minutes of action in the first half and cruised throughout the half. Covenant got on the board with a Margaret Cross 3-pointer at the 13:48 mark of the first half that made it 10-3. Blankenship had the only other made field goal for the Lady Scots in the first half as the Lady Tigers led 37-7 at the break.
The second half was more of the same as the Lady Scots could not find any rhythm offensively. Covenant ended the game shooting just 18.8 percent (9-48) from the field and 2-for-14 from behind the 3-point line.
Sewanee put four players in double figures as Kayla Sewell, Dana Middleton, Alex Ginsburg, and Logan Miller all had 11 points apiece. Sewell added 13 rebounds to record a double-double. The Lady Tigers made 23-for-57 (40.4 percent) from the floor and had a 49-29 advantage in rebounds.
Covenant will return home on Friday, Jan. 6 to take on Pensacola Christian at Barnes Physical Education Center. The Lady Scots were defeated by Pensacola Christian 54-50 on December 10.
