LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant Lady Scots basketball team fell at home to the Emory University Lady Eagles by a score of 87-43 Monday evening in Barnes Physical Education Center. Despite hanging close through the first several minutes of action, Covenant saw its three-point lead at the 13:25 mark disappear for good. Emory would take the lead and never look back, eventually going on a 24-4 run to end the first half. Covenant drops to 1-2 this season while Emory improves to 1-1.
Junior Jessie Blankenship led all scorers tonight with 18. She also grabbed seven rebounds. Hannah Craft and point guard Morgan Woodward pulled in six rebounds apiece. Covenant shot just 34.8% (16-for-46) from the floor, including 15.8% (3-for-19) from behind the arc. The Lady Scots turned the ball over 31 times and gave up 17 offensive rebounds. Emory scored 37 points off those turnovers and 14 on the second chances.
The Lady Scots were clicking early as they jumped out to a five point lead at the 15:50 mark. Woodward's pass in traffic to Blankenship for an easy lay-in was one of a few crafty plays seen in the opening minutes, but Emory scratched its way into its first lead with a pair of free throws from Misha Jackson at the 12:53 mark. The Eagles built a 21-point lead by halftime and only added to it in the second half, going up by as many as 47 in the closing minutes.
Everyone from the Lady Eagles side scored in the contest, including Jackson (14), Becca Feldman (12), Katie Dickerson (10), and Emily Hyncik (10) who all scored in double figures. Savannah Morgan dished out a game-high nine assists in her 20 minutes on the court.
Covenant will be back in action at home on Tuesday, Nov. 29 for a Great South conference matchup with Agnes Scott. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
