LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- On Tuesday night, the Lady Scots basketball team fell at home to the Agnes Scott College Lady Scotties in a close game that was tied going into half-time. Agnes Scott used several late free throws to pull away toward the end of the second half and win 44-38. Covenant's record is now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the GSAC. Agnes Scott improves to 2-3 (1-0 GSAC).
The first half remained close with the largest lead being only four points, which Covenant claimed with a Jessie Blankenship layup with just over a minute left in the half. Agnes Scott's Genefine Sapateh scored a layup to pull within two, and Arielle Register 's jumper with only two seconds remaining tied the score at 20-20.
Blankenship and Sapateh would finish as the scoring leaders with 16 apiece. Sapateh added 11 rebounds for her third double-double in five games this season.
Returning from the halftime break, the score stayed fairly close until the Scotties found a rhythm midway through the second half and went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to nine. Although Covenant caught back up, the Lady Scots missed the opportunities they had at regaining the lead with crucial turnovers and errant shot attempts. With the Agnes Scott lead chiseled down to only three and possession in favor of the Lady Scots, an offensive foul and two missed jumpers were all that Covenant could manage in the final 35 seconds.
Jessie Blankenship added eight rebounds to her team-high 16 points. Kimberley Reeves of Agnes Scott also had a double-double – her second of the year – with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Scots play their next game on the road against Salem College on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
