LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Saturday afternoon, the Covenant women's basketball team faced off against the Spelman Lady Jaguars in an early season conference matchup.  The game was intense, with 51 total fouls accumulated in the 40 minutes of action, but the Lady Scots took full advantage, going 31-for-44 (71%) from the free throw line to secure a 74-69 victory and improve to 1-1 this season.  Spelman College is now 0-1 for the year.

Senior Christine Core caused problems for the visiting Jaguars all day as she tallied 25 points on 6-of-9 shooting.  Core also had six rebounds and three steals.  Junior Jessie Blankenship added 21 points and 5 rebounds, while Ruth Gibson had 11 points and 7 boards.  Freshman Terah Hooper scored 10 points off the bench.

The Lady Scots jumped out to a good start in the opening minutes and never lost their lead.  The lead went as high as 15 during the first period before Spelman trimmed it to nine at the halftime break (30-21).

Though Spelman outscored Covenant in the second half 48-44, converted free throws late in the game helped the Lady Scots stay out of reach.  Those free throws even helped Covenant avoid the Jaguars 17-10 run in the final five minutes where they eventually cut the deficit to one possession.

Spelman's Jessica Reagans was the high-scorer for the visitors, accounting for 22 points.  Shanda Kennedy had 14 with a game-high eight rebounds, while Sterling Mitchell and Shereva Lewis scored 11 apiece.

Covenant's Ruth Gibson and Morgan Woodward both had four assists, allowing for some flow to the Lady Scots offensive attack.

Covenant's next game is at home at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21.
