NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant women's soccer team needed overtime but came away victorious, 2-1, in the semifinals of the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament Friday. In today's rematch, Covenant repeated the 90-minute draw but was able to score in overtime to beat the #1 Lady Trojans 2-1. The Lady Scots record is now 10-8-2 as they advance into the finals, which will be played against Asbury University Saturday at 5 p.m.
Despite a first half that only saw four shots from each side, Kara Lee was able to score in the 39th minute to put Covenant in the lead 1-0. The Lady Scots carried that advantage into the intermission.
Four minutes after the halftime break, Lady Trojan Brooke Gann equalized the match at 1-1 with a shot that went past Hannah Bales.
The Lady Scots defense, led most notably by junior Kathryn Allison, denied Trevecca on several occasions as the second half progressed at a 1-1 tie. Bales had six saves in the 90 minutes to keep the score tied.
In overtime, Katelyn Newsome found the net with under a minute remaining to send Covenant into the tournament finals. The Lady Scots will play Asbury Saturday at 5 p.m. for the Mid-East title and an automatic bid to the national tournament.
