LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant College men's soccer team prevailed over a chippy Methodist side in rainy conditions on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win at Scotland Yard. Goals from seniors Hunt Davidson and Julian Allgeier helped propel the Scots to victory, and goalkeeper John Eger made several crucial saves to record the shutout.
Indeed, shutouts and goals seem to be arriving in plenty for Covenant at Scotland Yard these days, as the team is now 4-0 at home while conceding zero goals and scoring 13. "This is our house, and we want to make sure other teams are aware of that," says Coach Pifer. "Any team that comes here needs to know we are going to put up a fight."
On this particular day, fight is exactly what the Scots had to do to overcome a well-organized and aggressive Methodist team. With the score at 0-0 for nearly the entire first half, it took a Hunt Davidson header with just 2 seconds remaining in the period for the Scots to break the deadlock. After a quick throw-in by Jackson Slagle found the feet of Matthew Hudnut, the freshman midfielder then sent the ball into the box where Davidson rose to head over the onrushing goalkeeper, Kyle Beach. The ball sailed into the net just seconds before the halftime buzzer sounded and the team went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
Even after conceding such a painful goal at the end of the first half, the Methodist Monarchs did not lie down at the beginning of the second half, as they continued to play tough against the Scots. In fact, it took until the 86th minute for the Scots to seal the deal via Julian Allgeier's penalty kick after the senior winger had been tripped in the box. It was Allgeier's eighth goal of the season, and it was enough to ensure the Scots moved to 6-3 on the season and maintained the perfect home record.
This Tuesday will prove to be a real test for Covenant, though, as it welcomes former rivals Bryan College to Scotland Yard for a nighttime showdown at 7:00 P.M.
