LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant Lady Scots, coming off of a much needed win over Oglethorpe University on Saturday, returned to action Tuesday night at Barnes Gymnasium as they hosted the University of the South. The Lady Scots got out of the gates quickly and never let the Lady Tigers into the match as Covenant got its second straight three-game sweep, winning this one 25-15, 25-7, 25-18.
The Lady Tigers (0-13) came into the match not only with a winless record on the year, but they also had just seven players available to compete, forcing their starters to play the entire match with the help of only one, lone substitute.
Covenant (5-6) made sure the Lady Tigers did not threaten in this one as the Lady Scots were able to build up a 22-11 lead in the first set after a Johanna Stoep kill. Covenant would finish off the first game win with a kill from Emily Stewart to go up 1-0 in the match.
Sewanee would score the first two points of the second set after a service ace from Adrienne Borchardt, but from that point on the Lady Scots routed the Lady Tigers to the tune of 25-5 for the rest of the set.
Covenant had to fight in the third set as they trailed 19-18 after an error from Erica Adams. The Lady Scots would answer the bell, however, and score the final seven points of the game, finished off by a Jessie Jakes service ace.
Emily Stewart led all players with 10 kills, but this was a true team effort from the Lady Scots as every one of the 13 players on the roster saw playing time. Kristin Dahlstrand added 23 assists and Jessie Jakes also chipped in 6 digs.
Tarver Shimek led the Lady Tigers with 4 kills and Liz Boddiford recorded 3 service aces.
Covenant will take to the road this weekend for a doubleheader in LaGrange, Georgia. The Lady Scots will first play LaGrange College at 2:00 and then follow that up with a match against Huntingdon College at 4:00. They do not return home until October 12.
