LAGRANGE, Georgia -- Playing in their fifth and sixth road matches of the year, the Covenant Lady Scots volleyball team had much to prove to their Great South Athletic Conference counterparts in LaGrange College and Huntingdon College. The Lady Scots did more than just prove themselves, they dominated the competition. Covenant came away with two straight set victories Saturday afternoon on the campus of LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia and were barely tested in the process.
In the first match against Huntingdon College, Covenant got off to a rough start in the first game but rallied and controlled the rest of the match, winning it 25-18, 25-14, 25-19. Trailing 5-1 early in the first set, Covenant stormed back on the strength of five Erica Adams kills to win the game. The Lady Scots continued the same trend in the second set as they never let the Lady Hawks gain any sort of momentum in getting a 25-14 set win. In game three, the Lady Scots trailed 20-19 late in the third but rattled off six consecutive points, four of those coming off kills, and ended the match when Emily Dupree was served up a kill from Kristin Dahlstrand.
In the second match of the day, Covenant played the host LaGrange College. The Lady Scots were tested in the second set but still got the straight set win 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-14).
Much like the first match, the Lady Scots did not allow their opponent to get any momentum going. LaGrange was only able to score back-to-back points one time in the first set as Covenant kept attacking. Jessie Jakes' kill ended the set and put the Lady Scots up 1-0. The Lady Panthers got out to a quick 9-2 lead in the second set, but Covenant battled all the way back to take their first lead of the set at 23-22 after a LaGrange error. LaGrange tied it up at 24 apiece, but consecutive kills from Erica Adams and Jessie Jakes ended the set and gave the Lady Scots a commanding 2-0 lead. The Lady Panthers would not get any closer to beating the Lady Scots in the third set as Covenant ran away with it, winning 25-14 to complete a very successful road trip.
Covenant was led on the day by Jessie Jakes who recorded 25 kills combined for the two matches. Erica Adams added in 19 kills, Paige Cheney chipped in 19 digs, and Kristin Dahlstrand had 61 assists for the entire day.
Covenant sees its record go over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 7-6. The Lady Scots have now won four matches in a row and within that win streak they have yet to allow a team to win a game. The Lady Scots will take the floor again this weekend as they travel to Demorest, Georgia to take on Agnes Scott College and Piedmont College. They will next play at home October 12th.
