LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Jessie Jakes had 10 kills and Kristin Dahlstrand added 28 assists and 13 digs, but it wasn't enough for the Lady Scots as they fell to Berry College 21-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-21 in the season opener at a raucous Barnes Gymnasium Thursday night.
The Lady Scots played well in the first set and were able to pull away from the Lady Vikings after the score was tied at 19. Covenant got three straight points aided by a kill from Emily Stewart and a service ace from Dahlstrand that ultimately decided the set and put Covenant up 1-0.
The Lady Vikings, however, were too much in the final three sets and would claim the match. Berry had three players in double digits in kills with Claressa Brekke leading the way with 12 and Stephanie Quinn leading all players with 35 assists. The Lady Vikings were able to hold off a flurry of points from Covenant in the final set as the Lady Scots cut a 23-18 deficit to 24-21, but a kill from Berry's Sarah Steffan that was set up by Quinn ended the match.
Covenant is now 0-1 on the young season and will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host UVA-Wise at 11:00 am and University of the Cumberlands at 3:00. Both matches will be played at Barnes Gymnasium.
