LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant Lady Scots got their first win of the season on Saturday by defeating UVA-Wise, but then fell in their second game to University of the Cumberlands.
In the first match, the Lady Scots dominated from the opening serve, winning 25-23, 25-19, 25-13. Erica Adams and Emily Stewart formed a tough one-two punch as they each recorded double digits in kills with 12 and 10 respectively. Bailey Daffron added in five service aces and Kristin Dahlstrand had 30 assists.
Covenant was able to stay a step ahead of the Lady Cavaliers the whole match and pulled away from them in all three sets at the end. The Lady Sots scored the final four points in the first set, the final three points in the second, and the final four in the third, with a kill from Stewart set up by Jessie Jakes, to end the match.
UVA-Wise was led by Mikaela Anders with 11 kills and Allie Smith who had 19 assists.
In the second match, the Lady Sots faced stiffer competition in the University of Cumberlands. The two teams battled back and forth all match long, but in the end it was the Lady Patriots getting the win in five sets: 25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 17-25, 15-12.
After a sluggish start in the first set, Covenant was able to regroup and win the second set, capitalizing on six straight errors from Cumberlands. After Cumberlands regained control of the match in the third set, Covenant again came out strong and, on the strength of two Johanna Stoep kills in the final few points, tied up the match at two apiece.
The fifth and final set started off great for Covenant as the Lady Scots took control by scoring six of the first seven points. The Lady Patriots never gave up, however, and scored the final five points of the match to get the win.
Covenant was led by Jessie Jakes and her 13 kills and 16 digs. Emily Stewart added eight kills and eight digs for the Lady Scots.
Amanda Hensley and Cassie Kalman each had 11 kills for the Lady Patriots with Hensley also getting 12 digs.
Covenant sees its record go to 1-2 after the doubleheader. The Lady Scots will next take the floor on Friday in the Berry College Tournament in Mount Berry, GA. Covenant's next home match is scheduled for September 14th against Maryville College at 6:00.
