Lookout Mountain, GA- The Covenant Lady Scots' softball team is now 0-10, but before you pass them off as flawed, inadequate, or downright awful, take a look at their schedule and pay attention to the quality of opponent they've been competing with. The combined win-loss record of 7 of their last 8 opponents is currently 34-3 (92%). In fact, the Lady Scots have already played three games against nationally ranked opponents in addition to four games against Trevecca-Nazarene, who is 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents.
Through these tough games, sophomore Beth Harris has been pulling as much weight as she can: 6 of 20 (.300) with 2 doubles and a triple. She has also accounted for 3 of her team's 11 runs. Junior Kim Cuticchia is just a step behind with 5 hits in her 20 most recent at-bats.
So although the Lady Scots' batting average as a team is currently .218 (compared to their opponents at .446) and their earned run average is 9.37 (compared to 2.18), Harris, Cuticchia, and others will see to it that these numbers begin to balance during the middle and latter parts of the season, when their strength of schedule isn't through the roof.
Covenant's next game will be Friday, March 12th at 2:00pm against Mid-Continent University. The game will be the first of the Covenant Softball Classic 2010.
