Chattanooga, TN- There are heart-breaking losses, and there are heart-breaking losses when your team is struggling to claim its first win. Covenant's softball team experienced the latter Tuesday night against Tennessee Wesleyan College in a 1-0, extra inning pitchers' duel, followed by a 9-6 near come-from-behind victory.
"Our play has improved and continues to improve, but errors and our overall inability to finish allowed Wesleyan to rally runs together when they needed them," said head coach Sara Russell.
In game 1, starter Chelsea Krafft did an "amazing job," according to Coach Russell, but the Lady Scots' offense had difficulty adjusting to left-hander Brittany Fox. Fox allowed no runs and only 1 hit, struck out 10 and walked 2 in her 8 innings pitched.
In game 2, freshman Sonja Townsend did her job as well (only 2 earned runs in 3.2 innings), but crucial misplays on defense helped Wesleyan build an 8-1 lead midway through the fifth. Despite the deficit, though, the Lady Scots rallied together and trimmed the lead to 8-5 before running out of steam. "I was proud of the way we fought back," continued Coach Russell, "we played much better, and our pitchers did very well."
Aubrey Shields and Kimberlee Peebles each had 3 hits on the day, Shields' accompanied by 2 RBI.
The Lady Scots will next face Milligan College (10-3) in Milligan, TN on Wednesday, March 24th. Their next home game will be Tuesday, March 30th against Reinhardt College (17-6).
