Lookout Mountain, GA- The Covenant College baseball team had much to be excited about this afternoon after walk-off hits from Luke Furuto in game one and Harrison Fisher in game two helped improve their record to 2-1 on the year.
Despite a shaky first inning and multiple extra base hits in the sixth, the Scots' pitching staff, led by starter Tyler Smith, allowed 5 runs on only 6 hits and struck out 7 in their quest for an extra-inning victory in game one. The game truly was as exciting as the weather was nice, but the excitement didn't take off until junior Brandon Hagopian bombed a home run over the right field fence to tie the game at 4 with only two outs remaining in the bottom of the seventh.
In extra innings, a solo shot from third baseman Bubba Owens gave Berea a 5-4 advantage and forced the Scots to put together another rally. This rally started with a base hit up the middle from James Rollins, continued after a walk to Jared Carlson, and ended with Luke Furuto's aforementioned double to left-center.
In game two, the Scots jumped out to an early lead and seemed well on their way to an easy win before the Mountaineers climbed back to 5-3 through 4 and 8-6 through 6. And again, the last inning contained the most excitement: After multiple walks/ hit batsmen, Berea managed to tie the game at 6, providing further proof of the old adage that "late walks tend to score." But during the bottom of the seventh, Berea's pitching staff returned the favor and walked freshmen Sterling Witt and Kurtis Wiles to help load the bases. Harrison Fisher's walk-off ground ball to third, then, provided the Scots all that was needed to claim their second victory of the season and of the day.
Covenant's leaders on the day were: Luke Furuto with 6 RBIs; James Rollins with 3 hits; and Brandon Hagopian and Harrison Fisher each with 2 homers.
Next up is Maryville College on Tuesday at 2:00pm. The single 9-inning game will be played on top of Lookout Mountain.
