Lookout Mountain, GA- Covenant's softball season began Saturday with a double-header against Berry College (4-2) that proved to be as exciting as they come. Game 1 started out positive for the Lady Scots when sophomore Chelsea Krafft struck out the side in the top of the first, but too many mental errors throughout the rest of the game hindered Covenant from keeping that momentum and taking the win. Both the second and sixth innings were extended for the Lady Vikings as a result of crucial misplays by the Lady Scots' defense. Despite Kraftt's respectable performance on the rubber (a walk and 4 strikeouts on 7 innings pitched), Covenant gave up 6 unearned runs and failed to ever put together a big inning. They punched a run across in each inning from the third on, but never were able to string together enough consecutive hits.
Game 2 was quite the opposite for the Lady Scots, but they again found themselves on the unfortunate end of a nail-biter. The ladies minimized their errors on defense as well as found a way to tie hits together for two big innings, but Berry's tough first year program still managed to eke out the win. Junior Lindsey Potter went 1 for 3 with a double and 2 runs batted in, and freshmen Courtney Wagoner, Jennifer Jobe, and Morgan Booker accounted for 4 other RBI. Indeed, the freshmen class may be the key to the Lady Scots' success this year- filling in the gaps and providing depth in certain areas. Although disappointed, head coach Sara Russell expressed that Saturday's games were just steps in the process of becoming a better team.
Covenant's softball program returns to action February 25th at Trevecca Nazarene University (currently 2-0). Game time is scheduled for 3:00pm. The Lady Scots don't return home until March 1st.
