Nasheville, TN- Trevecca Nazarene's Megan Hemmingsen had a career day against Covenant on Thursday, going 4 for 5 with 6 RBI to help the Lady Trojans claim two victories over the visiting Lady Scots. Her efforts alongside an impressive 21 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched by Riley Mashburn and Lauren Baker put Trevecca at a serious advantage.
But Covenant had their chances. The Lady Scots left 13 runners stranded, 6 of which were left in scoring position.
In game one, Trevecca jumped out to an earlier lead after scoring 6 runs through the first 2 innings, but despite the score, Covenant battled and posted two runs in the top of the third only to give those back in the bottom of the inning. Covenant scored two more in the fourth to cut into the then 8-2 lead but once again gave Trevecca too many chances in the bottom half and finally yielded to a 12-4 defeat.
In game two, Trevecca dominated both offensively and defensively. RBI and runs scored were dealt out fairly evenly between the Lady Trojans, and Lauren Baker struck out 14 of the 26 batters she faced.
Courtney Wagoner's home-run in the top of the seventh, though, may have set the tone for how the Lady Scots will play in their upcoming schedule: against St. Mary of the Woods College Saturday at 4:00 followed by Shorter College at 6:00. Both games will be played at Alto Park in Rome, GA.
