MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Just a little over a month ago, the Covenant College men's soccer team was 1-3 and loser of two straight. Multiple starters were injured, and the team appeared to be facing a long season ahead. But players filled in, attitudes turned around, and the injuries healed. And now, after enduring the rough early season woes, the Scots are holders of ten straight wins and an impressive 11-3 record.
The Scots last lost at Reinhardt College on September 9, and haven't looked back since. Nine consecutive victories later, and they had progressed to Saturday's showdown against Huntingdon College with a double digit win streak on the line. After travelling several hours and knowing that a few days of fall break lied in wait, there was always the danger that the Scots would overlook Huntingdon – a team they beat 8-0 last season – and slump to a poor performance.
Such did not turn out to be the case, though, as the Covenant starters once again jumped to an early first half lead. Sophomore Tyler Morrison scored two goals in the first period, while freshman Garrison Dale added a third just before half. Chris Pifer then scored a diving header off the post, his fifth headed goal of the season, before Morrison completed his hat-trick midway through the second half by putting away a rebound. Senior Brian Stair assisted three of the goals.
With the score at 5-0, Covenant held on to secure its 8th shutout and 10th consecutive victory. "This was a good road win and now we can head into fall break with a nice streak intact," said Coach Pifer. "Now we need to focus on continuing these good performances so that we can ride into the postseason on a high note." The Scots will now take to fall break before resuming their season this Saturday at home against Asbury University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm.
