LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Friday evening marked the end of a rough week for Covenant's Lady Scots soccer program when the team dropped a 3-1 decision to The University of the South at Scotland Yard. The loss, although only the third of the season, is Covenant's second in as many games and came as a result of the sloppy performance that seemed to carry over from Tuesday. Indeed, the woes that faced the Lady Scots against Maryville again haunted the Lady Scots against Sewanee. The team struggled to keep possession, suffered from several miscommunications, and ultimately could not find a way to stop the relentless Lady Tigers.
Covenant's slow start helped Lady Tigers sophomore Bess Goodman score early twice, once off a well-struck free kick and once via a well-timed through ball. The goals were Goodman's seventh and eighth of the year.
Less than eight minutes after Goodman's second goal of the day, the Lady Scots answered with a goal from Lauren Probst (also her eighth of the season). Freshman Molly Peele, in her first collegiate game, sent a corner kick to the awaiting forward, who, although heavily marked, found a way to head it in from 6 yards out. The goal cut the lead in half and gave Covenant some much needed momentum.
For the remainder of the first half and even a few minutes into the second half, the Lady Scots looked poised to draw even, but a back-breaking goal from Faith Spencer in the 60th minute pushed the lead back up to two, making it nearly insurmountable. Covenant continued to battle and earned several quality chances, but the Sewanee defense would have nothing of it. The Lady Scots were limited to 5 shots all game.
Senior goalkeeper Bethany Holman recorded a season best 9 saves on the day, 2 short of her career high. As always, Holman did not hesitate putting her body in harm's way to keep Covenant within striking distance.
Despite the two losses this week, the Lady Scots still boast an impressive résumé for their 2010 campaign. The team is 7-3-1 on the season, including 3-0 against NCCAA Mid-East opponents and 3-1 on the road.
Away from their home turf all next week, the Lady Scots will look to improve that résumé and return to climbing the NCCAA rankings. Their next match-up will be Tuesday at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00pm EST.
