ATHENS, Tenn. -- The Covenant Lady Scots hit the road once again Thursday night, this time against former Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Tennessee Wesleyan College. Playing their second former AAC foe in the span of nine days, Covenant was looking for better results after a crushing defeat at the hands of Bryan College last week.
Covenant started off sluggish in this one as they dropped the first two sets, but were able to bounce back and win the following two sets to force a fifth game. The Lady Scots hung right with the Lady Bulldogs but in the end were defeated 15-13 and lost the match 3-2 (25-20, 25-22, 16-25, 12-25, 15-13).
Covenant (11-11) was led by junior Jessie Jakes and her 17 kills which led all players. Jakes added 11 digs and has now recorded double digits in both kills and digs in two straight games. Emily Stewart also had double figures in both kills and digs with 11 and 13, respectively. Kristin Dahlstrand had another outstanding match with 37 assists; she now averages an impressive 8.13 assists per game and leads the Great South Athletic Conference in that category. Freshman Estes Carlson had 10 digs as well to go along with 3 service aces.
Jaclyn Evans led Tennessee Wesleyan (3-14) with 14 kills, and Shalonda Fugh chipped in 10 kills for the Lady Bulldogs. Brittany Adams led all players in digs with 19, and Sunni Jackson added 10 digs of her own.
The Lady Scots will travel to Macon, Georgia on Saturday as they look to improve upon their 11-11 record. On the campus of Wesleyan College, they will take on GSAC members Wesleyan and Spelman College. Covenant will return home on Thursday, October 28 to play the Scotties from Agnes Scott College at 6:30pm.
