LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Tennessee Wesleyan College and Covenant College have long been linked by proximity, rivalry, and at times, animosity. Dating back to the days of old, these two schools – which are separated by a mere 40 miles – have often been the source of some intense and fiercely competitive on-field battles. So, when Covenant's former Appalachian Athletic Conference opponents arrived on Scotland Yard Tuesday night, the stage was set for yet another showdown between these two storied schools.
Despite the eventual 0-0 first half scoreline, the game was wide-open and fast-paced from the start. Covenant racked up an impressive 16 shots in the opening period, while Wesleyan managed 9 of their own, including a header that ricocheted off the post and stayed out. But as the half wore on, it became clear that Covenant was the side in control of the game, and when the second half began, they picked up right where they had left off. Brian Stair took a Tyler Morrison through ball and slammed it beyond the reach of Wesleyan goalkeeper Miguel Valadez into the side netting for a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the half. It was the senior forward's fifth goal of the season, and it injected some life into the Scots offense. Senior winger David Pifer was one of those who took this cue, as he went on to score his seventh goal of the season with a shot from the top of the eighteen.
With the advantage doubled and the game now at 2-0 in Covenant's favor, the Scots did what they have become so accustomed to doing at home this season by securing yet another shutout. Goalkeeper John Eger had five saves on the day, and earned his seventh clean sheet of the year.
The Scots have now won nine straight games, and possess a 10-3 record. Their next game is away to Huntingdon College at 4:00pm this Saturday.
