LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- October on Lookout Mountain always means Homecoming, yet this year was slightly different than years in the past. With the volleyball and cross-country teams both on the road, the pressure fell squarely on the men's and women's soccer teams, particularly the Lady Scots, who invited Asbury University (2-10) to campus for the day's first match. The Lady Scot/ Lady Eagle matchup has provided great competition over the last several years. In 2007, the Lady Scots showed their dominance with a 5-1 victory in the post-season, but the Lady Eagles fought back in 2009, winning 1-0. As the many fans, comprised of students past and present, piled into the stands, it was clear that the 2010 meeting between these two schools would be another thriller.
The Lady Scots pushed the pressure in the first ten minutes, earning shots from Katelyn Newsome and Lauren Probst, but neither one had enough on it to get it past the keeper. After that, the first half seemed to be a battle of possession. Both teams found a way to advance the ball only to find a strong defense waiting for them on the other side. Asbury finally managed to get through the stellar Lady Scots defense but had both of their chances expertly denied by Covenant's reliable keeper, Bethany Holman. Bethany's save on a one-on-one finally gave the homecoming crowd of over 400 the opportunity to get loud. But despite the opportunities on both ends of the pitch, the buzzer sounded with the score standing where it had forty-five minutes prior.
The Lady Scots have been excellent this year in the second half, scoring 19 of their 24 goals after the first forty-five minutes. And what's more impressive is that the Lady Scots have only allowed 1 opposing goal this entire season in the second half.
Off the starting kickoff, the Lady Scots again tried to put the pressure on Asbury with two more good shots in the first thirteen minutes, but yet again could not find the net on either attempt. Besides the stellar defense by both sides, the goalies for each team were coming up big. Bethany Holman, who had already had one monster save on a breakaway in the first half, continued her great performance. And not to be outdone, Maegan Rogers was tested even harder and found a way to thwart two would-be break-away goals from the Lady Scots.
As the minutes melted away, it appeared as if the Lady Scots were going to have to fight it out in overtime for the second time in three games, but in the eighty-third minute, Kara Lee, who had been one of the main sources for offense for the Lady Scots in this possession-dominated game, got the ball on the right wing. With a sweet hesitation move, she got past her defender and ripped one of the best shots of the game off the inside of the back post to score the only goal of the game (her fourth of the season).
For the game's remainder, Asbury fruitlessly attempted to penetrate the strong Lady Scots defense, but within the slimmest of margins, the Lady Scots held on.
With that shutout, the Lady Scots have recorded seven clean sheets in nine games this season and have only given up two goals. This ranks them as one of the nation's best in goals allowed.
"The defense played great tonight," commented Head Coach Mark Duble after the game. "It was a solid performance all around and a great finish by Kara Lee."
The Lady Scots have two home games this week against Maryville College on Tuesday and the University of the South on Friday.
