LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- A rowdy, student-led, alumni-filled crowd of over one-thousand strong poured into Scotland Yard on Saturday night to cheer on the Covenant College men's soccer team as it battled LaGrange College in its 2010 homecoming match. The Scots were eager to continue their win streak of seven straight games by making it eight in a row against a LaGrange side that, in the end, provided them with very little resistance.
The score was 4-0 by halftime, with the Scots having out-shot their GSAC conference opponents 16-2 in the opening period. Chris Pifer scored two goals in the first half, both headers off of Julian Allgeier crosses, while Allgeier himself also netted one. Freshman Garrison Dale rounded out the scoring by slamming in the fourth off a nice volley from yet another Allgeier cross. "We really took it to them in the first half," said Coach Nathan Pifer. "It was a great crowd, great atmosphere, and thankfully we put it away early."
When Allgeier scored his second goal of the match just thirty seconds into the second half, the game was all but over. With the score at 5-0, Covenant emptied its bench for the remaining forty minutes of the match, and while LaGrange did manage to pull back one goal late in the second half, it was little consolation for a side that was never really in the match from the start.
"I am pleased that our alumni and other fans who were able to come out and see us score five goals in the homecoming win," said Pifer. "Hopefully we can continue to get their support, and continue to get the support of the student body in our upcoming games."
The Scots next game is at home on Scotland Yard this Tuesday night against a traditionally hard-fighting Tennessee Wesleyan side. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.
