Scots Play Aggressive But Fall to Wesleyan 64-78

Athens, TN-  Inconsistency and turnovers haunted the Covenant College men's basketball team Saturday night as they fell to their 12th loss of the season on the road to Tennessee Wesleyan.  "Consistency was an issue for us tonight against Wesleyan," said Coach Taylor after the game, "In the first half we played well defensively, but not offensively, and in the second half we really did a nice job on offense, but struggled to get stops on defense."  This was evidenced by the scoreline in that Covenant was able to limit Wesleyan to 33 first half points while scoring only 23 themselves, and in the second half when Covenant scored 41 but allowed 45 against.

Of their 64 total points, Zarome Lakey contributed the most with a team high 16, and Callum Sears was second with 13.  Stephen Buchanan and C.J. Robinson also contributed 10 apiece.  "I thought we were the more aggressive team," said Coach Taylor, "Zarome Lakey and Stephen Buchanan both attacked the basket aggressively and set the tone for us."  Even though Covenant may have appeared the more aggressive team on the night, they were nevertheless unable to overcome the inconsistencies and 24 turnovers that plagued them throughout the contest.

The Tennessee Wesleyan players played their part, too, converting many of their open shots, and taking advantage of their transition opportunities by finding the open man and scoring on multiple occasions.  Wesleyan's Jesse Booher led all players with 18 points from 6 three-point baskets.

On a positive side note for the Scots, the Wesleyan game saw junior point guard Domonique McGaughey feature in the lineup for the first time this season.  He scored 6 points from the bench, and will now look to join the rest of his Covenant teammates as they try to improve their record at LaGrange College on Monday.  Covenant defeated LaGrange 70-66 at home earlier in the season.
