Bristol, TN - Fresh off of being named to the Appalachian Athletic Conference's all-conference first team for the third time, and the AAC Defensive Player of the Year for a second time - senior guard Liz Martin scored 31 points, handed out five assists, and pulled down five rebounds, as the fifth-seeded Covenant College women's basketball team defeated fourth-seeded Union College 75-69 on Thursday morning in the AAC women's basketball tournament, being played at King College.
The Lady Scots (18-12) scored in their first possession after junior Erika Forland grabbed an offensive rebound and made the put back. Union (20-11) hit a 3-pointer on their end, and then Forland scored off another offensive rebound to make it 4-3, and Covenant never trailed again, leading at halftime 39-24, and then never allowing the Lady Bulldogs to get closer than four points down.
Forland finished her outstanding performance with a double-double, scoring 10 points and ripping down 16 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. Freshman guard Ashley Wilson - who was named to the AAC's All-Freshmen team, and was a third-team All-AAC honoree - just missed her own double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds to go with two assists and a steal. Freshman guard Margaret Cross also scored in double figures with 10 points, while freshman guard Hannah Craft had six points and seven rebounds, and sophomore forward DeDe Walls came off the bench for five points and six boards.
