Bristol,TN – Senior guard Liz Martin scored 43 points, handed out eight assists, pulled down four rebounds, and had three steals, as the Covenant College women's basketball team survived a miracle shot at the end of regulation to defeat King College in overtime 92-84 on Friday night.
The victory in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament semi-finals sends the Lady Scots to the AAC championship game on Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
The Lady Scots (19-12) trailed 74-73 with about twenty seconds left when Martin scored on a drive to give Covenant a 75-74 lead. King came down with a chance to win, but Covenant's defense was steel tough and forced King to turn the ball over with a bad pass out of bounds. King fouled Martin on the inbounds play with 4.4 seconds left, and she made both free throws to take a 77-74 lead. King threw a pass toward mid-court to guard Beth Raby who dribbled toward the top of the key and hit a 3-point runner at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
Covenant overcame the huge swing in emotion and took control in overtime almost immediately behind the defensive prowess of Martin, the AAC Defensive Player of the Year. The Lady Tornado won the jump ball, but Martin came up with a steal and was fouled. After making both free throws, on King's next possession, Martin intercepted a pass and took it the length of the court to give Covenant a four point margin that they never gave back.
Once again, as great as Martin was, she got help from junior forward Erika Forland and freshman guard Ashley Wilson. Forland scored 22 points and ripped down 17 rebounds, including six offensive boards. In the two tournament games she has 32 points and 33 rebounds, including 15 offensive boards. Wilson scored 18 points and added four steals, four rebounds, and three assists.
King had five players score in double figures with Ashley Deans finishing with 23, while Kristi Moody and Crista Burtnett added 14 each, Jessica Tharpe had 13, and Anisha Buchanan tallied 12.
