Barbourville, KY - Trailing 74-71 with five minutes left in the game, the Lady Scots rallied and outscored Union College 16-6 down the stretch to upset the Lady Bulldogs 87-80 Saturday afternoon in a big Appalachian Athletic Conference victory. The win for Covenant knocked Union into a three-way tie for first-place in the AAC with King College and Milligan College.
The Lady Scots (15-12, 9-7) who, with the win, clinched a first-round bye in the AAC tournament, never let up despite trailing 41-36 at the half. Freshman guard Ashley Wilson scored seventeen second-half points to lead the rally, after senior guard Liz Martin scored thirteen points in the opening half. Both guards finished with a team-high 21 points with Martin handing out eight assists and Wilson pulling down five rebounds and collecting three steals.
Natalea Gulyas also had a big game for Covenant as she finished with her first double-double of the season, scoring twenty points and ripping down thriteen boards. Junior forward Erika Forland just missed a double-double of her own, scoring eight points to go along with twelve rebounds.
Union (19-9, 11-5) got 26 points and nine rebounds from Brooke Smith, while Susanna Todd and Carley Blankenship added fifteen and eleven points, respectively.
Covenant plays its final two regular-season games this week, both at home. They will host the University of Virginia at Wise on Wednesday, February 18th at 5:30 PM and then Bluefield College on Saturday, February 21st, also at 5:30 PM, when the Lady Scots will honor their two seniors, Liz Martin and Natalea Gulyas, on Senior Night.
The AAC tournament begins first-round play on Wednesday, February 25th. The Lady Scots, one of six teams still vying for the top-seed, will open their AAC tournament action on Thursday, February 26th.
