Freshman guard Ashley Wilson had a big night, scoring 21 points, but the Covenant College women's basketball team dropped a tight contest to #3-ranked Trevecca Nazarene 69-62 on Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the Rosa Stokes Classic hosted by Cumberland University. The Lady Scots (8-6) defeated Cumberland University Friday night while Trevecca beat Short College in their Friday night match-up to lead to Saturday's showdown. Two Wilson free throws with 2:07 left cut the margin to 66-62, but three free throws down the stretch by Trevecca finished off the scoring.
Wilson added six rebounds, three assists and six steals to cap off a great line while senior point guard Liz Martin, who had 36 points in Friday night's game, finished with twelve points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. She was named to the All-Tournament Team. Junior guard Jessica Gowan finished with twelve points and freshman Kayla Sanders, junior Erika Forland and sophomore DeDe Walls, who also collected seven rebounds, all had six points apiece.
Trevecca Nazarene (12-0) the #3-ranked team in NAIA Division I, was led by forward Jennifer Bognar who had a double-double scoring nineteen points and grabbing fourteen rebounds while guard Abby Lawson chipped in with fourteen points and nine rebounds.
Covenant is off until after final exams and Christmas break, and will play at Tennessee Temple on January 5th before jumping back into Appalachian Athletic Conference action on January 7th against Virginia Intermont College and at Montreat College on January 10th.
