LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant volleyball used a dominant third set to take down Methodist, 3-1, at Barnes PE Center on Friday evening.

The Scots (1-1) were led in kills once again by Avery Maiden (12), who posted a .346 hitting percentage. Gabby Sumrall put down eight kills and stopped five attacks, including two solo blocks, while Evy Hammer led in assists with 17 and Henley Gentry led in digs with 12.

Trailing 13-11 in the first set, Covenant rallied to score eight of the next ten points, assisted by three kills from Maiden, one from Sumrall, and one from Kennedy Barber, to go up 19-15. The Monarchs (0-1) got back into it, tying it at 23, but a service error and attack error gave the Scots the set and a 1-0 advantage.

In set two, Covenant jumped ahead 5-1 early, but Methodist rallied again, and scored six straight at the end to knot matters at one apiece.

Then the Scots switched it on.

In possibly the most dominant set in program history, Covenant defeated Methodist 25-1 in set three, with the lone point for the Monarchs cutting the deficit to 12-1.

Sarah Jennings began things with a 12-point service run, including two aces, and then Henley Gentry served the rest of the way, acquiring four aces. Maiden had five kills in the set, Sumrall notched three, and Cali Sandhoff sent down two.  

Up 2-1, the Scots put themselves in a winning position with a 10-point rally in the fourth set, and coasted from there, gaining the 25-18 win in the set to take the match.

Savannah Hovander paced Methodist in kills with eight and blocks with seven, while Harper Evans had 18 assists and Ashley Farman posted 13 digs.

The Scots and Monarchs will face one another again tomorrow at 1 p.m.
