Volleyball Concludes Stint in Maine With Pair of Sweeps

GORHAM, Maine -- Covenant volleyball continued their winning ways on Saturday afternoon, sweeping both Southern Maine and Maine-Presque Isle in Gorham.

The sweeps gave the Scots a 15-set winning streak, as they swept all three opponents in Maine over their road trip.

MATCH ONE: Covenant 3, Southern Maine 0

A match that began and ended with dominance from the Scots led to a sweep of Southern Maine in the first match of volleyball's Saturday slate.

Avery Maiden posted 12 kills to lead the way, while Cali Sandhoff (19) and Evy Hammer (11) had double-digit assist efforts. Henley Gentry and Kennedy Barber combined for 11 service aces to aid the offense.

Defensively, Gentry had 11 digs, while Gabby Sumrall, Maiden, Scarlett Martz, and Sandhoff combined for the four Covenant (5-1) blocks.

Following a 25-10 set one win and a 20-15 lead in set two, the Scots' confidence was riding high. However, the Huskies fought back to tie it at 23.

Covenant did not allow them to gain any more ground, as Sumrall punched down a kill and then the defense forced an attack error to go up 2-0.

The third set went similarly to the first, as a late 8-1 run made it 23-9, thanks to two kills from Martz, one from Barber, and one from Addison Hill. Martz would then punctuate her excellent performance in the third set with back-to-back kills to end it.

Anyelis Hernandez and Taylor Joyal paced Southern Maine in kills with five, while Reese Helisek had nine assists and Joyal posted eight digs.

MATCH TWO: Covenant 3, Maine-Presque Isle 0

The Scots (6-1) concluded their trip to the Pine Tree State by sweeping Maine-Presque Isle, outscoring the Owls 75-20 in the match and holding them to a -.217 hitting percentage.

Delaney Stirm led Covenant with a season-best 10 kills, with Kayley Shanfelt adding nine and Cadie Weldon six. Carmen Harvey and Hailey Landrum combined for nine aces, while Chloe Finn had a season-high 16 assists to lead in that category.

Defensively, Marj Stark blocked a season-best three attacks and Henley Gentry had 11 digs.

In the first set, two of the three points the Scots allowed were on service errors, as Stark and Sparrow Sethman concluded the first set on kills to make it 25-3.

A subsequent 7-0 run in set two, which included three aces from Landrum, left little doubt about the outcome, as Addison Hill, Weldon, and Shanfelt combined for three kills to end the set 25-6.

Covenant coasted from there, as an ace from Landrum, a kill from Shanfelt, and an attack error, ended the match 25-11 in set three.

Rylie Kolkow and Jada Kee had two kills each for the Owls (1-1), while Maubi Mateo had seven digs.
