LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- After a nationwide search, James Cain has been tabbed as the Assistant Cross Country/Track & Field Coach, announced Director of Athletics John Hirte.
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to coach at a place like Covenant College," said Cain. "It's rare to find a place where discipleship and athletics go hand in hand. This has been an answer to many prayers, and I can't wait to see what the Lord does with this cross country and track program in the coming years!"
Cain ascends to the top of Lookout Mountain after a year as a graduate assistant coach for cross country and track & field at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. During that season, the YellowJackets finished inside the top six at the SCAC Championships in both men's and women's cross country and track & field.
"We are thrilled to have James join us here at Covenant," said Hirte. "It was evident early on in the process that James has a heart for walking alongside people and helping them know Jesus better through running and competitive sport."
Prior to being a graduate assistant at LeTourneau, Cain was a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Alabama-Huntsville, where he helped men's track earn Gulf South Conference championships in indoor and outdoor track, and men's cross country to an NCAA National Championships appearance.
"We're thrilled to welcome James as the next assistant coach for our program, as he brings passion for discipleship and love for the sport," said head coach
Eli Kaczinski. "He is going to make an immediate impact on our staff and we believe his efforts will help our program improve in all aspects!"
During his playing career for the Chargers of UAH, Cain competed in both cross country and track, compiling two top-10 finishes in distance events in track, while running personal best times of 25:41.0 in the 8k and 22:50.7 in the 4-Mile for cross country.Â
Hirte added, "His passion for discipleship and experiences as a high-level track athlete and coach will serve him well as we continue to grow and develop our running and track and field programs at Covenant."
