DEMOREST, Ga. -- Covenant baseball dropped their first game of the series with No. 24 Piedmont in Demorest on Friday, 7-1, at Loudermilk Field.

Jonathan Ponder had the lone RBI of the day for the Scots (11-18, 4-9 CCS), while Daniel Bell, Daniel Counts, and Drew Avant also added hits. James Lee (1-4) struck out three in his seven innings of work.

The Lions (22-9, 8-2 CCS) were able to jump ahead quickly in the first two frames, scoring three on an error, a double, and a sacrifice fly.

Ponder would respond in the fifth, driving home Bell to cut it down to 3-1.

Lee was on point from the third through sixth innings as well, trying his best to keep the Scots in the game, allowing just two hits in those four frames.

Piedmont would manufacture one final push, though, dropping a four-spot in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

Cody Funk went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Lions, while Andrew Misirly (3-2) earned a win with seven one-run frames.

UP NEXT

The Scots finish their series with Piedmont with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. tomorrow.
