DEMOREST, Ga. - Covenant traveled to Demorest to take on Piedmont in their conference opener. The match was played extremely close throughout but ultimately it was the Lions who came away with the win.
Covenant threw the first punch by sweeping all three doubles courts to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Gavin Patton and Lincoln Shine put the first doubles match on the board as they beat Rohan Kavali and Horacio Rodriguez 6-3 in the three spot.Â
Graham Hayes and Brock Boehling clinched the doubles point at the number two spot as they knocked off Charles Parnell and Mark Backeberg 6-3. Ben Onufrock and Caleb Domkowski clinched the doubles sweep for the Scots as they earned a 7-5 win over Leyton Dunn and Caleb McElveen at number one.
Piedmont evened the score at 1-1 as Onufrock was forced to retire just five games into his match with Backeberg at the top spot. McElveen gave Piedmont their first lead of the day as he raced past Shine in the six spot 6-1, 6-0. Domkowski brought the match back to 2-2 as he dominated at number two, defeating Parnell 6-4, 6-0.Â
Rodriguez and Patton battled in the number five spot, but eventually Rodriguez came away with a 6-4, 6-4 win to put Piedmont one match away.
Piedmont was able to clinch the match at the number four spot as Kavali was able to defeat Boehling in a dramatic 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. Hayes was able to add one more point for Covenant as he defeated Dunn in a marathon match, by a score of 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-1 at number three.
