NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Covenant softball recorded 21 hits between their final two games on Wednesday in Myrtle Beach, taking game one over Keystone, 8-1, but falling to Penn State-Harrisburg 4-3 in game two.
GAME ONE: Covenant 8, Keystone 1
A 15-hit outburst and seven brilliant innings from
Elizabeth Yother were more than enough for the Scots to take game one, 8-1.
Six of the starting nine had multi-hit efforts for the Scots, led by a three-hit, three-RBI game from
Julie Mavity, while Yother (6-4) struck out 10 and allowed one unearned run in her complete game effort.Â
The runs came early for Covenant in their first game, as
Madison Taylor's leadoff single,
Julie Mavity's RBI triple, and
Cassidi Phillips' RBI single made it 2-0 quickly.
The Scots would add two more in the second with Taylor's RBI double and another RBI triple from Mavity, and then waited until the fifth to tack on, as Yother and
Cailey Barnett brought home another pair of runs.Â
The final two runs came in the sixth and seventh frames, as Mavity drove in
Gracie Lacle in the sixth and Yother sent
Lily Campbell home from second in the seventh.
Yother did the rest from the circle, as she allowed just three hits and three walks over the course of her outing.
Isabella Benitez had a 2-for-3 day at the plate to head up the Keystone offense, while Amaia Smith (0-3) got the loss in the circle.
GAME TWO: Penn St.-Harrisburg 4, Covenant 3
The Scots nearly pulled off the seventh-inning comeback, but had the tying run thrown out at home, falling 4-3 in game two.Â
Megan Porras led the offensive charge with a two-hit effort, while
Kallie Branum and
Charley Clark drove in a run apiece.
After falling behind 4-0, Covenant was down to their final three outs, and had a chance to make it interesting.
The Scots started the inning well, getting a
Gracie Lacle walk and a
Madison Taylor single to put twp runners aboard.
Cassidi Phillips was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Branum drew a walk of her own to get the first run across and put the winning run on first base with one out.
Covenant would get gifted their second run via a wild pitch, putting the winning run at second, prompting a Lions' pitching change. Clark stepped to the plate and delivered, punching a single up the middle to bring in pinch-runner
Emma Baltzersen, but a perfect throw from center field got to home just in the nick of time to cut down Campbell at home.Â
Clark (3-8) was handed the loss in the circle, but she struck out six over her six innings, while Megan Folz (2-0) got the win, with Kylee Miller gaining the save.
