COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Covenant softball fell in their final two games of the MUW Invitational on Saturday, losing to Sewanee, 3-0, and then MUW, 5-1.
GAME ONE: Sewanee 3, Covenant 0
Six errors befell the Scots as Sewanee had just enough offense to win, 3-0, in game one.
Charley Clark (0-2) went the distance, allowing three unearned runs on two hits and one walk, while striking out an impressive eight.
Cassidi Phillips continued her strong start to the campaign with another multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3, as the Scots outhit the Tigers, 6-2, over the course of the game.
Sewanee's winning run came in the first inning, as an error allowed Abbie Buckner to score from third. They would add two more in the fourth on an error and a sacrifice fly.
Covenant's best chance to score came in the fifth inning. as two runners were in scoring position with two outs. However, a hard-hit ball by
Madison Taylor was run down in center field to end the rally.
Reagen Huskey (2-0) earned the win for the Tigers, throwing all seven innings and striking out four.
GAME TWO: MUW 5, Covenant 1
A four-run fourth inning by the Owls was enough as Covenant could not generate a rally in the final innings, falling 5-1 in game two.
Madison Taylor had a nice game offensively for the Scots, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Lexi Tincknell drove in the lone run for Covenant.
The Owls got on the board first with a sacrifice fly, but the Scots responded in the top of the fourth, as Tincknell doubled in Taylor to tie it up at one.
However, in the bottom of the inning, three RBI hits for the Owls would put them up 5-1, and the Scots could not generate a rally in the latter innings.
Brooklyn Rhodes (2-1) got the win behind a complete game effort, while
Elizabeth Yother (0-2), was handed the loss, going all six innings with five punchouts.
UP NEXT
The Scots host their first official home contests of the season against Berry on Thursday, beginning at 1 p.m.
