LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant baseball got a combined shutout effort from their pitching staff to complete the series sweep over Greenville with a 5-0 win at the Covenant baseball field on Friday afternoon.
Zach Barrett (1-0) earned the win after firing six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out five.
Jonathan Glover followed with two scoreless frames, recording one strikeout, before
Aeden Beuning shut the door with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, punching out one.
The Scots put together a pair of successful rallies to get the job done offensively as well, led by multi-hit games from
Ryan MacLellan and
Ezra Finton.
The scoring got started in the first inning, as
Roby McClarnon crossed the plate on an opposite field RBI single by
Sam Cecil.
Then it was Barrett's turn to shine, as he escaped multiple jams with runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Then the offense wanted in on the fun.
In the bottom of the fifth, Covenant had five consecutive men reach base with two outs, with
Cole Akins' two-RBI double, Finton's hustle RBI-double, and
Elliott Eastin's RBI-single ballooning the lead to 5-0.
Barrett, Glover, and Beuning took it from there, throwing four combined one-hit innings to complete the sweep.
Landyn Smith led the Panther offense with a pair of hits, while JD Bowser (0-1) was handed the loss, allowing four earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.
