HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Covenant men's soccer came out firing and did not look back, overwhelming Piedmont, 4-0, to claim their second CCS title in program history, and 11th overall conference title in program history.
The four goals came from
Jackson Bostrom,
Henry Parker,
Jackson Hinson, and
Sam Conrad, with Parker and Bostrom adding assists, as the offense was firing on all cylinders and did not take their foot off the gas.
J.T. Tolson made seven saves in his finest performance of the season.
The back line of
Eli Daniel,
Sean Freace,
Daniel Wallis, and
Noah Jones played all 90 minutes defensively as well.
Bostrom kicked off the scoring in the 15th minute, as after his 11th minute chance got denied, made up for it quickly and put a pass from Parker home for the early advantage.
Ian Adams and Conrad attempted to add on in the 15th and 21st minutes, but did not succeed, however, in the 28th minute, Parker did, taking it himself to give the Scots (7-8-2) the 2-0 lead.
Tolson and the defense stepped up after that point, as Tolson made a pair of saves, while
Carlton McClure generated another chance in the 38th minute to keep the Lions (7-11-1) on their toes going into half.
At the outset of the second half, it looked like Piedmont might have a comeback in the works, as a foul gave the Lions' Davis Knight a penalty kick. However, Tolson, in his crowning moment, saved the initial shot, and then forced Knight to miss wide on the rebound to preserve the lead.
Inspired by their goalkeeper, the offense kicked it back into gear, as Bostrom put two more shots on net, and Conrad added one off the post. The one off the post proved consequential, as Hinson secured the rebound and put it back in to put Covenant in prime position with the 3-0 lead.
Finally, in the 68th minute, Conrad received his chance at redemption, and converted, taking Bostrom's feed and scoring to get the Scots ever closer.
It was all defense from there, as a frenetic Lions team created three late chances, but Tolson stuffed them all to put the match, and championship, on ice.
Jean Franco Loria made six saves for Piedmont, while Josh Duquette, Tyler Vogt, Boris Basic, Knight, Daris Mustic, and Edwin Sosa-Reyes played all 90.
