LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant women's basketball hung in with visiting Centre for three quarters, but could not overcome a fourth quarter run from the Colonels, falling 68-54 in their season opener at Barnes PE Center.
Emma Kaye Fuller led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points, while freshman
Shea Vanderwey notched a near double-double in her collegiate debut with nine points and eight rebounds.
Nevi Wilkey added six points and team-highs with nine boards, four steals and three blocks in her Scots debut.
After falling behind 13-0 early on, Covenant (0-1) began to make it interesting, as Fuller knocked down a three, followed up later by an
Ellie Causey triple and a Vanderwey layup to cut it down to 13-8. The Colonels (1-0) would re-extend the lead back to eight at the end of the period, though.
In the second quarter, the Scots defense kicked it up several notches, holding Centre scoreless through the first 5:53 of the period, forcing a pair of turnovers. They also outscored the Colonels by four in the quarter, as
Anna Everett's three made it 32-28 at half.
After the break, Covenant came out firing, scoring 10 straight in the first 2:32, getting a pair of triples from
Violet Wright and layups from Wilkey and
Jada Sanders to take their first lead, 38-32.
Back-to-back layups from Vanderwey midway through the third gave the Scots their largest lead (seven), but Centre was able to claw back in late in the third to tie it at 47 by period's end.
In the fourth, however, it was all Colonels, as they outscored Covenant 21-7 in the period to win the game, 68-54.
Lola Fouts impressed with 20 points to lead Centre, while Arin Nipp added nine rebounds and KaNiah Edelen posted five steals and five assists.
