Women's Soccer Wins First CCS Regular Season Title

JACKSON, Miss. -- Covenant women's soccer secured their first CCS regular season title in program history, along with their first outright conference title of any kind since 2006, in a 2-0 win at Belhaven on Saturday evening.

With that win, the Scots (7-5-2, 5-0-1 CCS) will be the No. 1 seed in the CCS Tournament, gaining a first round bye. They will play the winner of the Huntingdon/Piedmont quarterfinal match on November 6th in Huntsville, Ala. at 6 p.m. eastern.

Abbey Heupel notched both goals for Covenant, the second brace of her career, getting assists from Georgie Strawbridge and Tess Duble. The defense played spectacularly as well, as Bronwyn Kickasola made two saves, while Gretchen Caswell, AT Simon, Kensley Elam, and Campbell Ayres each played all 90 minutes.

Heupel and the offense got started early in the match, as Lila Wiley generated a shot on goal at the 4:10 mark, forcing a save from Belhaven keeper Addi Roberts, but just 34 seconds later, Heupel earned a chance and converted off of a pass from Duble to give Covenant the early 1-0 advantage.

The rest of the first half was a defensive showcase for the Scots, as they allowed just two errant shots the remainder of the half, making it 1-0 at the break.

The Blazers got their first crack at tying the score 2:20 into the second half, as Jensen Ward tried to shoot toward the left side of the net, but Kickasola was up to the task, stopping that shot to keep the lead.

Then, 7:39 later, Strawbridge brought the ball down the left side and crossed it toward the net, where a waiting Heupel headed it in for her second goal and a 2-0 lead.

Covenant did the rest on the defensive end, as Kickasola only had to make one more save, with the rest of the defense confusing the Belhaven offensive attack the rest of the match.

Roberts made six saves for Belhaven in total, as the Blazers will be the No. 2 seed and likewise earn a bye to the semifinals.
