LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant women's soccer honored their six seniors in dominant fashion, defeating LaGrange, 4-0, at Scotland Yard on Saturday afternoon.
The win moves the Scots (5-5-2, 4-0-1 CCS) into a tie for first place in the CCS standings, while the Panthers dropped to 1-10-2 (0-4-0 CCS).
Senior
Lila Wiley, along with
Chloe Jordan,
AT Simon, and
Maren Halvorson, scored goals in the match, while
Tess Duble and senior
Blythe Jelley recorded assists. Senior
Bronwyn Kickasola added her 11th career shutout in net as the defense held LaGrange to just four shots.
In the first 10 minutes of the match, LaGrange came out with an aggressive formation that prevented Covenant from generating any good looks. However, in the 13th minute, Duble fed a beautiful pass to Wiley, who notched her sixth goal of the campaign by sliding the ball to the right side of the net.
The offense, having broken through, saw Wiley, Simon, and
Campbell Ayres find looks on net, but Panther keeper Anna Wright stopped all three. Then, in the 42nd minute, Jordan took a corner kick and somehow deflected it off of Wright, tucking it in the left side of the net for her first career goal to make it 2-0.
Clara Norris got one final chance before half, but Wright stopped that shot as the half ended 2-0.Â
The Scots added four more shots in the first 10:21 of the second half, forcing new LaGrange keeper Carson Makuch to make a pair of saves. The barrage continued late into the half, as 11 more shots were fired before finally, a foul inside the box by the Panthers gave Simon a penalty chance, which she converted to make it 3-0.
Then it was Halvorson's turn, as the freshman, after being denied on her first two shots of the match, received a lob pass from Jelley and snuck it by Makuch for her first career goal in the 89th minute.
The defense likewise stepped up in the second half, allowing just two shots, both of which were off target. Senior
Gretchen Caswell, along with
Aggie Gordon,
Kensley Elam, Jelley, and Simon did their part, helping the Scots come away with the win.
For LaGrange, Wright and Makuch combined for 10 saves, while Hennessy Lopez, Carson Wingo, and Carlee Roland played all 90 minutes.
